A.B.M. Russel: eResearch Project Leader

As the eResearch Project Leader for VeRSI Russel leads, mentors and manages the eResearch use-cases and applications development team of software engineers. These capability projects develop software tools and cutting edge ICT solutions allowing researchers to interact securely, remotely and collaboratively with colleagues, computing resources and data. Reporting directly to the VeRSI Executive Director, Russel aims to accelerate the adoption of eResearch by Victorian researchers and takes an active role in the research and development of innovative solutions.

Russel ensures that project solutions are delivered in a timely manner, addressing the needs of researchers. He is currently managing VeRSI's Virtual Organisation services. Russel is a member of several national and international computer societies and is currently an active member of many eResearch, middleware, security and Grid project steering committees and technical working groups.

As an early adopter of the eResearch and Grid computing advancement in Australia, Russel has been successful in the research and development of several projects. He has extensive experience in secure data transfer, Compute Grid and Data Grid middleware. He also has excellent command of distributed database design, data modelling, interface development, GSI (Grid Security Infrastructure), PKI (public key infrastructure) and Shibboleth, as well as project management.

Prior to joining VeRSI Russel fulfilled eResearch Software Specialist and eResearch Technical Assistant roles at Monash University, in the ITS Infrastructure Services division. He was also part of the Monash e-Research Centre virtual team, from its establishment, and he integrated the Monash Grid with national and international Grids for collaborative research. He is one of the founding members of the Monash SunGrid facility. At Monash, he designed, developed and managed the SunGrid middleware infrastructure and lead the Grid team to provide high performance computing and storage facilities to the Monash research community.

Previously, Russel was the Lead Investigator for one of the Storage and Interoperability work packages of the DEST funded DART project and the technical lead for the ARC LIEF funded Data Grid project. He was also a Chief Investigator and Project Leader for the DEST funded MAMS mini-grant project to design a federated authentication and authorisation infrastructure for Monash eResearch Grid services. Russel worked as a Computational Engineer at VPAC, designing and developing the Engineering Grid portal and toolkit for Virtual Engineering and Design. Russel has also been an instructor, tutor and lab assistant at RMIT University. He achieved a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Computer Science and Engineering at MANIT followed by a Master of Applied Science (Networked and Distributed Systems) in Information Technology at RMIT. He is also completing a Computer Science PhD in high performance computational Grids for scientific instruments and sensors in the Monash University Faculty of IT.
