Paul Davis: eResearch Consultant
Paul Davis has played a seminal role in the development of eResearch in Australia; he was previously the Executive Director of VeRSI before handing over to Ann Borda in April 2008.
This appointment followed an extensive consultancy for the Victorian Government during which Davis wrote the VeRSI proposal which secured funding for the Program. VeRSI will provide a cohesive and coordinated approach to accelerating the uptake of eResearch by researchers. Under Paul's direction VeRSI is expected to deliver research leadership by harnessing enabling technology in a way that fosters a productive, collaborative research environment and by developing key examples of how eResearch can enhance research outcomes. Several of the VeRSI projects are directly associated with the Australian Synchrotron, others will develop eResearch exemplars in the life sciences involve imaging.
Paul is a member of several eResearch, middleware, security and network committees and was a member of the eResearch Coordinating Committee's Technical Working Group. He has provided advice to DEST and DCITA as well as advice and opinion to State governments departments and industry. He is an advisor to DEST on the NCRIS activities and is assisting the 5.1 (Evolving biomolecular platforms and informatics) and 5.16 (Platforms for Collaboration) facilitators.
Paul is the Director of Paul C Davis and Associates Pty Ltd, a company specialising in the management of science programs and eResearch. Until recently he was the Executive Director and CEO of GrangeNet, Australia's first 10Gbps optical research network. GrangeNet fostered the development of grid and advanced communications services and was a catalyst in Australia's involvement in the evolution of the next generation of research networks. GrangeNet funded key projects in fields as diverse as endangered language, distributed computing, video annotation, the access grid and tele-science (tele-microscopy).
